Introduction

Our Lutheran School system is an integral part of the educational system in Kansas as well as the entire U.S. Our elementary Lutheran schools date back to the 1830’s when Lutheran congregations established Christian Day Schools for their children. The first of these schools is older than our public school system. We are not in competition with the public school; rather, we work closely with the public schools and community. What makes our school unique is that we are convinced that Christian training is best done in the home, church, and school. In our school, Christ is the center of instruction in all our classes. Topeka Lutheran School, located at 701 Roosevelt, has been in operation since 1874 for many years as St. John’s Lutheran School, and since 1952 as Topeka Lutheran School serving K-8th grade families in addition to housingthe half-day preschool. Our Center for Young Children (CYC), established in 1999 and located at 1732 SW Gage, is a state licensed child care facility and preschool serving infant through PreKindergarten families. For more information about CYC, click on About Us, then scroll down the menu to Center for Young Children.

“Securing Each Child’s Future - Equipped”
2011-2012 School Year Theme

We are all members of the body of Christ. When we injure a foot or an ankle, our body uses its other parts to compensate for the loss of function. As members of the body of Christ, we live our lives in service. Service to each other and in service to our Lord. To secure a future, full of hope and promise, for our children we must help them to be securely grafted to the vine of life, Jesus Christ. All of us: students, teachers, staff, parents, and friends, are bound together by being Christians and firmly believing in God’s promises. Our help and hope is in the Lord. Scripture, God’s Word, explains, describes, and illistrates, our course of action and our future. With our future secure in the Lord, we live out our lives being good stewards of the many gifts God has given us. Let us rejoice and be glad in our stewardship. Our school building continues to receive many renovations over the summer. We are also working to transform ourselves into the likeness of Christ our Savior. The physical appearence is easy to change, we expend dollars, sweat, and energy and things change, it’s concrete, it’s physical. What about the mental or spiritual? Faith come to us through the hearing of God’s word as the Spirit of God works in our hearts and minds. People see the results in the fruit of the spirit being poured out in acts of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, and self control. There is no law to condem us when our lives are secure in the future of heaven.

Control and Government

Topeka Lutheran School is owned and governed by three Lutheran congregations in Topeka: Christ, Faith, and St. Johns.  The Board of Education meets on a monthly basis to hear reports and conduct necessary business. A primary function of the board is to enact policies by which the school can be administered. The day to day business is conducted by the principal who has been given that authority by the board.

Accreditation

The school is fully accredited by the State of Kansas and it complies with the rules and regulations governing the education of students. Teachers at TLS are certified by the State of Kansas.

Authority

Authority in our school is based on the Word of God. The Gospel motivates us. The Law will show the Christian his/her shortcomings, give a goal to strive for, and direct us. Obedience developed in Christian Education comes from faith and love in God. Love for one another is a result of the faith and love in God.

Mission Statement

Under the Triune God, Topeka Lutheran School strives to nurture families, prepare students academically through Christ-centered education, and integrate faith and life, so students and their families are equipped to share the love of Jesus.

History

Topeka Lutheran School has been in operation since 1874 when the Rev. P.G. Germann, pastor of the newly established St. John’s Lutheran Church, organized a private school in the church basement at 2nd and Van Buren streets in Topeka. The school soon became a church project, and in 1885, the congregation built a two-room school house. St. John’s Lutheran School continued to grow, and in 1888 they added a third room to the facility. In 1919, the church bought three lots at 4th and Harrison in Topeka, and opened a new school at this location in 1922. By 1948, this facility had grown to a five-room operation and was quickly outgrowing the site. In 1949, the church purchased a plot of ground at 7th and Roosevelt.

On July 3, 1951, the Lutheran School Association, Topeka, Kansas, was organized by four Missouri Synod Lutheran churches in the Topeka area. At that time, St. John’s Lutheran School became Topeka Lutheran School, and a new facility was opened at 701 SW Roosevelt in September 1952. The school continues to be located at 701 SW Roosevelt, although it has undergone several additions / remodeling projects since then. Currently, three Topeka Lutheran church congregations are associated with the school: St. John’s, Faith, and Christ Lutheran Churches.

Topeka Lutheran School’s curriculum is based on the guidelines of the State of Kansas and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.
The Topeka Lutheran School Foundation was founded in 1971 to provide financial assistance to the school. The Foundation’s endowment is a fund of assets invested so that a continuing source of income is available for the school’s needs. The interest is then used for scholarship aid to students or capital and program improvements at the school.
